Evidence supporting the use of: Ginsenosides
For the body system: Reproductive System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ginsenosides, the primary active compounds found in ginseng (Panax species), have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in East Asia, to support reproductive health. In traditional Chinese medicine, ginseng has been prescribed for centuries to enhance vitality, improve sexual function, and address symptoms related to reproductive health in both men and women. The rationale in traditional systems is that ginseng "tonifies Qi," improves stamina, and addresses conditions like impotence or infertility by restoring balance and energy in the body. From a scientific perspective, there is limited but emerging evidence that some ginsenosides may influence the reproductive system. Preclinical studies suggest certain ginsenosides could influence hormone regulation, sperm motility, and sexual function, mainly in animal models and in vitro studies. For example, some animal studies have reported increased testosterone levels and improved sperm quality, while small human studies have indicated possible benefits for erectile function. However, these studies are generally of low quality, small sample size, or lack rigorous controls, and meta-analyses have concluded that the evidence remains inconclusive. Overall, the primary justification for using ginsenosides to support the reproductive system is rooted in tradition, with only modest scientific evidence supporting these uses so far. More robust clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy and safety for this specific indication.
