Gamma linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid found in evening primrose oil, borage oil, and black currant seed oil, has been researched for its potential effects on the reproductive system, particularly in relation to premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and related symptoms. Several studies have examined GLA supplementation for PMS, breast pain (mastalgia), and menopausal symptoms. While some clinical trials have suggested modest benefits in reducing breast pain and alleviating certain PMS symptoms (such as irritability, depression, and breast tenderness), the evidence is inconsistent and often limited by small sample sizes and methodological weaknesses.

Systematic reviews, such as a 2019 Cochrane review, have generally concluded that there is insufficient high-quality evidence to firmly recommend GLA for PMS or other reproductive health issues. Some traditional and alternative medicine practitioners continue to recommend GLA-rich oils for these purposes, but mainstream clinical guidelines do not endorse their routine use for reproductive health. Overall, while there is some early scientific investigation into GLA’s potential reproductive benefits, the current body of evidence does not strongly support its efficacy, leading to a moderate rating for scientific justification.
