Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 5

Estrogen is a hormone that plays a central and well-established role in the female reproductive system. Scientific evidence strongly supports its use in this context. Estrogen is produced primarily by the ovaries and is responsible for regulating the menstrual cycle, supporting the development of secondary sexual characteristics, and maintaining the health of the reproductive tissues, including the uterus, fallopian tubes, and vagina. It is also essential for preparing the endometrium for potential pregnancy after ovulation and is involved in the feedback mechanisms that regulate the production of other reproductive hormones such as luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).

Clinical applications of estrogen include hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopausal women to alleviate symptoms such as hot flashes, vaginal atrophy, and osteoporosis, all of which are linked to declining estrogen levels. Estrogen is also a critical component of many forms of hormonal contraception, providing reliable prevention of ovulation when administered in combination with progestins. Numerous randomized controlled trials and long-term observational studies have validated the efficacy and safety (when used appropriately) of estrogen in these contexts. Thus, the use of estrogen to support the reproductive system is robustly grounded in modern biomedical research and clinical practice.
