Dioscorea collettii and Dioscorea hypoglauca are species of yam used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), often referred to as "bitter yam" or "wild yam." Historically, their rhizomes have been incorporated into herbal remedies, sometimes to address conditions believed to involve the reproductive system, such as pelvic inflammatory disease, menstrual irregularities, or infertility. The traditional rationale is rooted in TCM concepts like “removing dampness and heat” and “activating blood circulation,” which are thought to benefit reproductive health. However, the direct use of Dioscorea collettii or Dioscorea hypoglauca specifically for reproductive system support is not as prominent or direct as with some other Dioscorea species, such as Dioscorea opposita (Chinese yam).
Scientific evidence supporting these species for reproductive health is limited.
