Evidence supporting the use of: DHA (docosahexaeonic acid)
For the body system: Reproductive System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is an omega-3 fatty acid found abundantly in fish oil and algae, and its role in reproductive health has been subject to scientific investigation. DHA is a critical structural component of cell membranes, including those in the reproductive system. In women, DHA accumulates in ovarian follicles and is present in follicular fluid, suggesting a role in oocyte (egg) quality and maturation. Some studies indicate that adequate maternal DHA intake during pregnancy is linked to improved fertility outcomes, better embryo quality, and may also play a role in fetal development. In men, DHA is highly concentrated in sperm cell membranes, where it contributes to sperm motility and overall sperm quality. Clinical studies have shown that DHA supplementation can improve certain semen parameters in men with fertility issues. Overall, while the evidence for DHA's support of the reproductive system is promising and biologically plausible, especially in the context of fertility and pregnancy, it is not as robust or conclusive as for DHA's neurological benefits. The majority of studies are observational or involve supplementation in populations with suboptimal baseline omega-3 status. There are very few large, randomized controlled trials directly demonstrating improved reproductive outcomes with DHA supplementation alone. For these reasons, the evidence is rated as moderate (3/5), with scientific backing but a need for more high-quality, targeted research.
