Cyperus (commonly referring to Cyperus rotundus, also known as nutgrass or musta) has a long-standing history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and other Asian medicinal traditions. In Ayurveda, Cyperus is considered to have properties that balance the doshas and is frequently used to address menstrual disorders, regulate menstrual cycles, alleviate dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), and support general female reproductive health. Similarly, in TCM, Cyperus (called Xiang Fu) is used to regulate Qi and alleviate gynecological issues such as irregular menstruation and menstrual pain.
While there are a limited number of modern scientific studies examining the precise mechanisms or clinical efficacy of Cyperus for reproductive health, some preclinical studies suggest it may have antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, and mild estrogenic effects, which could theoretically explain its traditional uses. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and most evidence remains anecdotal or based on traditional knowledge rather than rigorous scientific validation. Therefore, the justification for its use in supporting the reproductive system is primarily traditional, with modest preliminary scientific support that does not yet reach high levels of evidence.
