Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Cistanche, particularly Cistanche deserticola, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as a tonic for supporting the reproductive system. Historically, it is known as "Rou Cong Rong" and is classified as a yang tonic, believed to enhance sexual vitality, improve libido, and address issues such as impotence and infertility in men, as well as support fertility in women. Ancient Chinese herbal texts, such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing," describe its use for nourishing kidney yang, which in TCM theory is closely linked to reproductive health and function.

Modern scientific research on Cistanche’s effects on the reproductive system is limited but growing. Some animal studies suggest that extracts of Cistanche may improve sexual performance, increase testosterone levels, and enhance sperm quality. For example, studies in rodents have shown improved sperm count and motility, as well as increased sexual behavior after administration of Cistanche extracts. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the mechanisms by which Cistanche might exert these effects are not fully understood.

In summary, while traditional use for reproductive health is well-documented and there is some preliminary scientific support from animal studies, there is insufficient human research to conclusively validate these effects. Thus, its use is best characterized as traditional, with moderate supporting evidence.
