China Rose (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in Asia, for supporting reproductive health. In Ayurvedic and Unani traditions, various parts of the plant—most notably the flowers—are used as remedies for menstrual disorders, to promote menstrual flow, and to address infertility or sexual health concerns. Folk medicine practitioners have employed China Rose as an emmenagogue (to stimulate menstrual flow) and occasionally as an aphrodisiac. There are also historical references to its use for managing excessive menstrual bleeding and regulating menstrual cycles.
However, scientific research validating these traditional uses is limited and largely preliminary. A few animal studies suggest potential estrogenic or uterine stimulatory effects, but robust human clinical trials are lacking. The evidence base is thus primarily historical and traditional, rather than grounded in modern scientific validation. Some phytochemical analyses have identified compounds in Hibiscus species that could theoretically influence reproductive hormones or uterine muscle activity, but these findings are not sufficient to confirm efficacy or safety for reproductive health support in humans. As a result, while China Rose continues to be used in traditional herbal formulations for the reproductive system, its effectiveness remains unproven by rigorous scientific standards.
