Agnoside is an iridoid glycoside primarily found in the plant Vitex agnus-castus (chaste tree or chasteberry). Traditionally, extracts of chaste tree have been used in European and Mediterranean herbal medicine to support the female reproductive system, particularly for conditions such as premenstrual syndrome (PMS), menstrual irregularities, and symptoms associated with menopause. The historical use of chasteberry is well-documented in ancient Greek and Roman texts, where it was believed to have an effect on hormonal balance and was used by women to address various menstrual disorders.
While agnoside itself is one of the principal constituents of chasteberry, most of the traditional use is attributed to the whole fruit or extract rather than the isolated compound. The mechanism by which chasteberry supports reproductive health is thought to involve modulation of the pituitary gland, potentially influencing levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and prolactin, though specific effects of agnoside alone are not well-characterized.
Scientific studies on chasteberry extracts have shown some benefit for PMS and related reproductive concerns. However, direct evidence regarding agnoside as an isolated compound is limited.
