Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Wheat bran is widely recognized in scientific literature for its beneficial effects on bowel health, specifically in supporting the function and health of the rectum and lower digestive tract. Wheat bran is the outer layer of the wheat kernel and is rich in insoluble fiber. Numerous randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews have demonstrated that wheat bran increases stool bulk and decreases intestinal transit time, thereby alleviating constipation—a major factor in rectal discomfort and disorders such as hemorrhoids and diverticulosis. For example, a meta-analysis published in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" (2013) concluded that wheat bran effectively increases stool frequency and improves stool consistency. These effects are attributed to the insoluble fiber content, which absorbs water and adds bulk to the stool, making defecation easier and reducing straining. Straining is a primary risk factor for rectal issues such as hemorrhoids and anal fissures. The use of wheat bran for regularity and rectal health is also supported by clinical guidelines, which often recommend increasing dietary insoluble fiber as a first-line intervention for chronic constipation. While wheat bran is less effective for all types of constipation (e.g., slow-transit constipation), its benefit for rectal function and prevention of complications related to constipation is well validated. Thus, there is robust scientific evidence supporting the use of wheat bran to support the rectum and lower bowel health.
