Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Bifidobacterium (mixed species) is a genus of probiotic bacteria commonly found in the human gut. There is moderate scientific evidence supporting the use of mixed Bifidobacterium strains to support rectal and broader lower gastrointestinal health, particularly in relation to bowel regularity and relief of symptoms related to rectal disorders such as constipation and, to a lesser extent, hemorrhoids. Randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews have shown that Bifidobacterium supplementation can improve stool frequency and consistency in adults with chronic constipation, which indirectly benefits rectal function by reducing straining and the risk of fissures or hemorrhoids. Some studies have also indicated a reduction in inflammation and improved mucosal health in the distal colon and rectum, though direct evidence specifically targeting rectal diseases is limited. The mechanism is thought to involve modulation of the gut microbiota, production of short-chain fatty acids, and strengthening of the intestinal barrier. However, while the clinical evidence is promising, most studies focus on broader gastrointestinal health rather than the rectum specifically, and the strength of evidence for direct rectal benefits is moderate rather than strong. No significant traditional use of Bifidobacterium for rectal health has been documented, as its application is rooted in modern probiotic science. Overall, Bifidobacterium may support the rectum as part of its action on the lower gastrointestinal tract, but more targeted research would be needed for a higher evidence rating.
