Evidence supporting the use of: Danshen
For the health condition: Raynaud's Disease
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza) has been traditionally used in Chinese medicine to promote blood circulation and treat cardiovascular conditions. In the context of Raynaud’s Disease, its use is primarily based on its vasodilatory and antiplatelet properties, which are thought to improve microcirculation. Several small clinical studies and preclinical investigations have evaluated the effects of Danshen and its extracts for Raynaud's phenomenon, mostly in China. These studies suggest that Danshen may reduce the frequency and severity of Raynaud’s attacks, potentially by improving blood flow and reducing blood viscosity. However, the methodological quality of these studies is generally low, with limitations such as small sample sizes, lack of blinding, and insufficient controls.
Systematic reviews of herbal treatments for Raynaud’s phenomenon have noted Danshen’s inclusion in multi-herb formulas, but also highlight the need for more rigorously designed clinical trials. The European Medicines Agency and other major regulatory bodies do not currently recognize Danshen as an evidence-based treatment for Raynaud’s disease. Thus, while there is some preliminary scientific evidence—mainly from small or uncontrolled studies—to support Danshen’s use for Raynaud’s, it is not robust or widely validated. Its use for this indication remains experimental, and patients should not substitute it for established therapies without consulting a healthcare provider.
