Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Spikenard (Nardostachys jatamansi) has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine for a variety of skin conditions, including rashes and hives. Historical texts and ethnobotanical reports describe the application of spikenard oil or pastes to soothe irritated or inflamed skin, likely due to its purported anti-inflammatory and calming properties. The root is cited in several ancient medicinal systems as a remedy for skin eruptions, itching, and other dermal complaints.

However, modern scientific studies specifically evaluating the efficacy of spikenard for rashes and hives (urticaria) are limited. Some laboratory studies have indicated that spikenard extracts may possess general anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which could theoretically be beneficial for skin irritation, but direct clinical evidence in humans is lacking. The bulk of support for its use in these conditions remains rooted in traditional practice rather than robust clinical research. As such, spikenard's role in treating rashes and hives should be considered with caution and primarily as a traditional remedy.
