Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Speedwell (Veronica officinalis) has a long history of use in European folk medicine for various skin conditions, including rashes and hives. Traditional herbalists valued Speedwell for its purported anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, often applying it as a wash or poultice to irritated skin. Historical herbals from the 16th to 19th centuries mention Speedwell as a remedy for itching, eczema, and other mild skin eruptions. However, contemporary scientific research on Speedwell’s efficacy for rashes or hives is extremely limited. There are only a few in vitro studies suggesting general anti-inflammatory effects, but these do not specifically address dermatological conditions. Modern phytotherapy texts may list Speedwell as a minor skin remedy, but there are no high-quality clinical trials or robust pharmacological investigations supporting its use for rashes or hives. Therefore, while Speedwell’s application for these conditions is grounded in tradition, scientific validation is lacking, and the evidence supporting its effectiveness is minimal.
