Evidence supporting the use of: Sesame Oil
For the health condition: Rashes and Hives
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Sesame oil has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for treating various skin conditions, including rashes and hives. In Ayurveda, sesame oil is considered to have soothing, anti-inflammatory, and moisturizing properties and is commonly applied topically to calm irritated skin, reduce redness, and promote healing. The oil's emollient qualities can help support the skin barrier and relieve dryness and itchiness, which are common symptoms of rashes and hives.
However, while these traditional uses are well-documented, scientific validation for sesame oil's efficacy specifically in treating rashes and hives is limited. Some laboratory studies have shown that sesame oil possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which may theoretically benefit inflamed skin. There is also some evidence of its use as a carrier oil in topical formulations for eczema or dermatitis, where it may provide symptomatic relief.
Despite these properties, robust clinical trials or studies directly evaluating sesame oil for rashes or hives are lacking. Therefore, while its use is justified by tradition and supported by its general skin-soothing properties, scientific evidence remains limited, and the overall strength of evidence is modest.
