Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sea salt has a long history of traditional use for various skin conditions, including rashes and hives. In many cultures, saltwater baths or compresses have been used as folk remedies to soothe irritated skin, reduce itching, and promote healing. The rationale behind this practice is that saltwater may help to cleanse the skin, draw out impurities, and provide mild antiseptic effects. Some anecdotal reports suggest that sea salt, which contains trace minerals in addition to sodium chloride, may be particularly soothing for inflamed or itchy skin.

However, the scientific evidence supporting the use of sea salt specifically for rashes and hives is limited. While saline solutions (often using purified salt) are sometimes recommended for certain dermatological applications, robust clinical studies on sea salt baths or compresses for rashes and hives are lacking. The available evidence for saltwater benefits is mostly extrapolated from its general cleansing and mild antimicrobial properties, rather than targeted studies on allergic skin reactions like hives (urticaria). Overall, sea salt is used more out of tradition than based on solid scientific validation for this particular condition.
