Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

The Sausage Tree (Kigelia africana) is widely used in traditional African medicine, particularly for various skin conditions such as rashes, hives, eczema, and infections. Topical preparations made from the fruit, bark, or leaves are applied to the skin to soothe inflammation, reduce swelling, and promote healing. Ethnobotanical surveys from several African countries report the use of Kigelia africana extracts by local healers to treat skin problems, including allergic reactions manifesting as rashes and hives. The traditional rationale is based on the plant’s perceived anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Scientific studies do indicate that extracts from the Sausage Tree exhibit antibacterial and antifungal activity in vitro, and some research suggests anti-inflammatory effects in animal models. However, there is limited direct clinical evidence supporting its efficacy for treating rashes or hives in humans. Most available data are preclinical or anecdotal, and controlled human trials are lacking. Despite these limitations, the consistent ethnomedical use across regions, combined with some laboratory evidence of relevant biological activity, provides a moderate but not robust level of support (rated 2/5) for its traditional application in managing rashes and hives. More rigorous clinical research would be necessary to validate these uses scientifically.
