Evidence supporting the use of: Psacalium peltatum
For the health condition: Rashes and Hives
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Psacalium peltatum, also known as “matarique,” is a plant traditionally used in Mexican and Southwestern herbal medicine. Its use for skin conditions such as rashes and hives is primarily rooted in traditional medicine practices. Ethnobotanical records indicate that indigenous and rural communities have applied poultices or decoctions of the root to irritated skin, rashes, and other dermatological issues. The rationale in traditional use is based on observed soothing and anti-inflammatory effects, although mechanisms were not scientifically elucidated by those practitioners.
However, scientific evidence supporting these uses is limited. A small number of preliminary pharmacological studies have identified the presence of sesquiterpene lactones and other compounds with potential anti-inflammatory activity. Yet, no robust clinical trials or well-designed animal studies specifically evaluating the efficacy of Psacalium peltatum for rashes or hives (urticaria) exist. Most available research focuses on its general anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective properties rather than dermatological applications.
In summary, the use of Psacalium peltatum for rashes and hives is primarily justified by traditional practices, with ethnobotanical documentation but only very limited pharmacological rationale and no clinical validation.
