Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

The use of orchids for treating rashes and hives is primarily rooted in traditional medicine, particularly within Chinese and Ayurvedic systems. Several species from the Orchidaceae family, such as Dendrobium and Bletilla striata, have been used in herbal preparations for various skin conditions, including inflammation, wounds, and sometimes rashes. Bletilla striata, known as "Bai Ji" in Chinese medicine, is especially notable for its topical use to soothe skin irritations and promote healing. However, there is very limited scientific research specifically validating the efficacy of orchid extracts for the treatment of rashes or hives. Most available studies focus on the general anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, or wound-healing properties of certain orchid species, often in cell culture or animal models, rather than direct treatment of urticaria or dermatitis in humans. The traditional use is well-documented in herbal texts, but high-quality clinical trials are lacking. Therefore, while the practice is supported historically in traditional medicine, modern scientific evidence for the use of orchid for rashes and hives remains minimal.
