Mesua (commonly known as Mesua ferrea or Nagakesar) has a long-standing history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, particularly in the Indian subcontinent. In Ayurveda, various parts of the Mesua tree—especially the flowers and seeds—are employed for their purported anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and skin-healing properties. Traditionally, pastes or decoctions of Mesua are applied to the skin to treat rashes, hives (urticaria), and other inflammatory skin conditions. The rationale for its use is mainly based on its "cooling" and anti-inflammatory effects described in classical Ayurvedic texts.

However, while some laboratory studies suggest that Mesua extracts possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities, there is a lack of robust clinical trials or modern scientific studies directly evaluating its efficacy for rashes or hives in humans. The evidence supporting its use is thus primarily traditional, with only preliminary scientific support from in vitro or animal studies. Until further clinical research is conducted, Mesua’s application for these conditions remains grounded in historical and ethnobotanical practice rather than strong scientific validation.
