Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

The Matapalo tree, commonly referring to several species of hemiepiphytic fig trees (Ficus spp.) in Central and South America, has a longstanding place in traditional medicine among indigenous peoples. In particular, the latex, bark, and leaves of Matapalo have been used in topical preparations to treat a variety of skin ailments, including rashes and hives. Ethnobotanical records from regions such as the Amazon and Central America note its application to inflamed or irritated skin, with healers attributing soothing or anti-inflammatory properties to its extracts. However, scientific studies specifically investigating these effects are limited, and robust clinical trials are lacking. While some preliminary phytochemical analyses show that Ficus species contain compounds such as flavonoids and triterpenoids, which may have anti-inflammatory or antimicrobial activities, direct evidence for efficacy in treating rashes or hives is absent in the scientific literature. Thus, the practice is supported by tradition and ethnomedical reports rather than modern scientific validation.
