Evidence supporting the use of: Manchurian Thorn
For the health condition: Rashes and Hives
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Manchurian Thorn (Crataegus pinnatifida, also sometimes called Chinese hawthorn) has a longstanding history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and some folk medicinal systems, though primarily for cardiovascular and digestive health. There are occasional references in TCM texts to its astringent properties and its ability to "clear heat" and "dispel wind," which are concepts sometimes associated with rash and hive-like skin eruptions in TCM theory. These uses are largely based on the plant's presumed anti-inflammatory and antioxidant constituents, as well as its general ability to "move blood" and reduce stasis, which are believed to help resolve skin irritations.
However, the evidence supporting the use of Manchurian Thorn specifically for rashes and hives is limited to these traditional frameworks and anecdotal reports. There are no robust clinical studies or pharmacological investigations directly linking Manchurian Thorn or its extracts to efficacy in treating urticaria (hives) or allergic rashes. Most scientific research has focused on its cardioprotective and metabolic benefits. As such, while its use for rashes and hives is justified in a traditional context, the scientific validation for this indication is weak or absent.
