Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Fang-Feng (Saposhnikovia divaricata) is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb commonly used in formulas to address "wind" conditions, which in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) often include symptoms like rashes, hives (urticaria), and itching. Historically, Fang-Feng has been used for centuries in China to "expel wind" and "alleviate dampness," concepts that in TCM are associated with sudden skin eruptions, itching, and allergic-type responses. It is a common ingredient in classical formulas such as Xiao Feng San, which is prescribed for acute or subacute skin conditions characterized by redness, itching, and weeping lesions.

Scientific validation of Fang-Feng specifically for rashes and hives is limited. While some pharmacological studies have investigated its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. The majority of evidence for its use in treating rashes and hives is based on traditional practice rather than modern scientific data. Thus, its use for these conditions is justified primarily by a long history of traditional application, with limited but suggestive preclinical support.
