Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Corktree typically refers to plants in the genus Phellodendron, especially Phellodendron amurense (Amur corktree). In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the bark of the corktree ("Huang Bai") has been widely used to treat a variety of inflammatory conditions, including skin disorders such as rashes, eczema, and hives. Historical medical texts and TCM practitioners have utilized corktree bark for its purported "heat-clearing" and "dampness-drying" properties, which are believed to help alleviate swelling, redness, and itching associated with dermatological issues. Some laboratory studies have shown that extracts from Phellodendron species possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which could theoretically benefit skin ailments. However, these studies are primarily in vitro or animal-based, and there is a lack of robust clinical trials in humans directly assessing its efficacy for rashes or hives. As such, while there is a strong foundation for its use in traditional medicine, scientific validation remains limited. The evidence supporting its use for rashes and hives is therefore primarily traditional, with some preliminary pharmacological support but no high-quality clinical evidence.
