Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Calotropis gigantea, commonly known as crown flower or "arka" in Ayurveda, has a long history of traditional use in Indian and Southeast Asian medicine systems for various skin conditions, including rashes and hives. Traditional practitioners have used its leaves, latex, and extracts topically to alleviate inflammation, itching, and redness associated with dermatological issues. The plant is believed to possess anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and analgesic properties, which may contribute to its effectiveness reported in folk medicine.

However, scientific validation for these uses remains limited. Only a few preliminary studies have investigated the anti-inflammatory and wound healing potential of Calotropis gigantea extracts in animal models and in vitro. Some research has shown that certain phytochemicals present in the plant, such as flavonoids and cardenolides, may exhibit anti-inflammatory effects. Nevertheless, there is a lack of robust clinical trials or comprehensive studies specifically assessing its efficacy and safety for treating rashes and hives in humans.

Due to the presence of potentially toxic compounds in the latex, caution is advised, as adverse reactions are also reported. In summary, while Calotropis gigantea is traditionally used for rashes and hives and there is some preliminary pharmacological support, high-quality scientific evidence is still lacking.
