Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Australian Sandalwood (Santalum spicatum) has a long history of traditional use by Indigenous Australians and in folk medicine for various skin conditions, including rashes and hives. The wood and its oil have been applied topically to soothe irritated skin, likely due to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. However, while there is some in vitro and animal data supporting anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects of sandalwood oil, the majority of scientific studies focus on Indian Sandalwood (Santalum album) rather than Australian Sandalwood. There are very few rigorous clinical studies specifically evaluating the efficacy of Australian Sandalwood oil for rashes or hives in humans. As such, the use of Australian Sandalwood for these conditions is primarily justified by tradition rather than strong scientific evidence. The available evidence supporting its use for rashes and hives is weak (rated 2/5), mostly consisting of anecdotal reports and limited laboratory research. Care should be taken, as essential oils, including sandalwood, can themselves cause allergic skin reactions in some individuals.
