Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Asoka (Saraca asoca) is a well-known herb in Ayurvedic medicine, primarily used for gynecological disorders such as menorrhagia and dysmenorrhea. Its use for skin conditions like rashes and hives (urticaria) is based on traditional Ayurvedic texts, which describe Asoka’s properties as cooling, astringent, and beneficial for “clearing the blood” and skin. However, specific clinical or pharmacological studies validating Asoka for rashes and hives are lacking. Most references to its use for skin ailments are anecdotal or found in compilations of Ayurvedic remedies rather than in controlled scientific studies. There is limited evidence of anti-inflammatory or anti-allergic effects in laboratory settings, but these have not been robustly linked to the treatment of urticaria or acute skin rashes in humans. Therefore, the recommendation for Asoka in these conditions is based almost entirely on traditional knowledge rather than modern scientific validation. Overall, the traditional evidence exists but is weak and not well-supported by contemporary research.
