Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Potentilla anserina, commonly known as silverweed or Anserina, has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine. It has been employed for various ailments, primarily gastrointestinal issues and as a general astringent. The use of Anserina for rashes and hives is largely based on its astringent properties, which are thought to help dry and soothe irritated skin. Herbal texts from the 19th and early 20th centuries occasionally mention topical application of silverweed preparations to calm skin irritations, though rashes and hives are not the most commonly cited indications. There is very limited direct traditional documentation specifically linking Anserina to the treatment of urticaria (hives) or acute allergic rashes, but its general use for irritated or inflamed skin is recognized in folk medicine.

However, there is no robust clinical evidence or scientific research supporting the efficacy of Anserina for rashes or hives. Most information is anecdotal or comes from herbal monographs referencing its mild anti-inflammatory and astringent effects. Thus, while its use is rooted in tradition, the supporting evidence is weak and largely historical rather than scientific.
