Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Aloe vera has been traditionally used for a variety of skin conditions, but there is also scientific evidence supporting its use for rashes and inflammatory skin reactions such as hives (urticaria). Aloe vera gel contains compounds like polysaccharides, glycoproteins, and antioxidants that exhibit anti-inflammatory, soothing, and wound-healing properties. Several studies have shown that topical application of Aloe vera gel can reduce skin inflammation, redness, and irritation when compared to placebo or standard treatments.

Clinical studies, though limited in number and size, indicate that Aloe vera gel can help in managing mild to moderate inflammatory skin conditions, such as allergic rashes and contact dermatitis, which are similar in presentation to hives. For instance, a 2012 review in the "Indian Journal of Dermatology" highlighted Aloe vera’s anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, which help soothe irritated skin. However, there are relatively few controlled clinical trials specifically focusing on hives (urticaria), and most evidence is extrapolated from studies on related skin irritations.

Overall, Aloe vera’s use for rashes and hives is supported by both traditional use and a moderate level of scientific evidence, primarily from studies on its anti-inflammatory and skin-healing properties. Nevertheless, more high-quality, condition-specific research is needed to confirm its effectiveness for this particular indication.
