Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Achyranthes, particularly Achyranthes aspera, has a longstanding use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine. Its application for skin conditions, including rashes and hives (urticaria), is documented in several ethnobotanical sources. Traditional healers have used poultices, pastes, or decoctions of the plant for various skin ailments, with purported anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and wound-healing effects. However, the scientific evidence directly supporting its efficacy for rashes or hives is minimal. Most available studies focus on Achyranthes’ broad anti-inflammatory or antioxidant properties, often in animal models or in vitro settings, rather than well-designed clinical trials for dermatological conditions. To date, there are no robust, peer-reviewed clinical studies confirming its safety or effectiveness specifically for rashes or hives in humans. Thus, while its use in this context is rooted in tradition, the evidence base remains weak and largely anecdotal.
