Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Abuta (commonly referring to Cissampelos pareira or related species) has a long-standing history of use in traditional medicine systems in South America and parts of Asia. In ethnobotanical records, Abuta has been employed for a wide variety of ailments, particularly as an anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and in the treatment of gynecological problems. There is documentation of its use in the treatment of skin conditions, including rashes and hives, by indigenous groups in the Amazon and practitioners of Ayurveda and folk medicine. However, the references to its topical or internal use for rashes and hives are largely anecdotal, appearing in ethnomedical surveys and compilations of traditional plant uses.

Scientifically, there is a paucity of rigorous clinical or pharmacological research specifically addressing Abuta’s efficacy for rashes or hives (urticaria). Some laboratory studies have identified anti-inflammatory and antihistaminic properties in extracts from Abuta species, which could theoretically provide some benefit for skin irritation. However, these studies are preliminary, not focused on dermatological conditions, and have not been translated into clinical recommendations or guidelines. Thus, the use of Abuta for rashes and hives is best characterized as traditional, with low-level supporting evidence, and lacking robust scientific validation.
