Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sargassum, a genus of brown seaweed, has been used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in East Asia, for various dermatological and inflammatory conditions, including psoriasis. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Sargassum is known as "Hai Zao" and is believed to have properties that "soften hardness" and "reduce swelling," making it a common ingredient in remedies for conditions characterized by skin thickening or inflammation. However, while there is a long history of traditional use, the direct application of Sargassum specifically for psoriasis is based more on its general anti-inflammatory and detoxifying reputation rather than targeted evidence for this disease. Modern scientific research on Sargassum's effects on psoriasis is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts from Sargassum species contain bioactive compounds (such as fucoidans and polyphenols) with anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. These properties could, in theory, be beneficial for conditions like psoriasis that involve immune dysregulation and inflammation. However, there have been no robust clinical trials directly evaluating Sargassum in people with psoriasis. Therefore, while traditional use is well-documented, scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for psoriasis remains weak and preliminary.
