Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lactobacillus species are being investigated for their potential role in supporting or treating psoriasis, based on emerging scientific evidence linking gut microbiota to skin health—a concept known as the "gut-skin axis." Several small clinical trials and preclinical studies suggest that certain probiotic strains, including Lactobacillus species, may modulate immune responses and reduce systemic inflammation, both of which are implicated in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. For instance, a 2019 randomized controlled trial (J Am Acad Dermatol) found that supplementation with Lactobacillus paracasei helped improve the severity of psoriasis symptoms in a subset of patients. Animal studies have also demonstrated that Lactobacillus supplementation can decrease inflammatory cytokines and improve skin lesions in psoriasis models.

However, the overall quality and quantity of evidence remain limited. Most studies have small sample sizes, short durations, and often use probiotics as adjuncts to standard therapies. There is not yet a consensus in the dermatological or gastroenterological community that Lactobacillus probiotics are an established treatment for psoriasis. The use is therefore justified on the basis of preliminary scientific data rather than tradition or robust clinical validation. Further large-scale randomized controlled trials are needed to establish efficacy, optimal strains, and dosages.
