Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Echium oil is derived from the seeds of Echium plantagineum and is notable for its high content of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, particularly stearidonic acid (SDA) and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). There is a scientific rationale for the use of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in inflammatory skin conditions like psoriasis, as these fatty acids can modulate inflammatory pathways and improve skin barrier function. Some small-scale studies and preclinical research have shown that GLA-containing oils (such as borage or evening primrose oil) may have modest benefits in reducing symptoms associated with psoriasis due to their anti-inflammatory properties. Echium oil, containing both SDA and GLA, has been investigated primarily for cardiovascular and general anti-inflammatory effects, with limited direct research targeting psoriasis. A few studies suggest that SDA can be efficiently converted to EPA, an omega-3 fatty acid with known anti-inflammatory effects, which may theoretically benefit psoriatic skin. However, to date, there are no large, high-quality clinical trials specifically evaluating echium oil as a treatment for psoriasis. Therefore, while there is scientific plausibility and some indirect supporting evidence for echium oil’s use in psoriasis management, the direct clinical evidence remains weak and preliminary. Further research is needed to substantiate its efficacy and safety in this context.
