Andrographis paniculata has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, where it is valued for its anti-inflammatory and "blood cleansing" properties. In the context of psoriasis, some traditional practitioners have recommended Andrographis as an herbal remedy to help reduce inflammation and support skin health, although it is not a mainstream or primary treatment in these systems. The rationale is based on its general use for skin conditions linked to inflammation and immune dysregulation.
Scientific research specifically evaluating Andrographis for psoriasis is limited. A few preclinical studies have demonstrated that compounds in Andrographis, such as andrographolide, possess anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, which could theoretically benefit psoriasis, an immune-mediated inflammatory skin disorder.
