Nettle (most commonly Urtica dioica, or stinging nettle) has a history of use for urinary and prostate conditions, including prostatitis and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Its use for prostatitis is supported by a combination of traditional European herbal medicine and some scientific studies, though the evidence is modest and not definitive.
Several clinical trials and laboratory studies have investigated nettle root extracts, often in combination with other herbs like saw palmetto, for their effects on lower urinary tract symptoms. The mechanism is thought to involve anti-inflammatory properties and inhibition of certain enzymes and sex hormone-binding globulin, which may reduce prostate-related symptoms. However, most of the robust evidence is for BPH rather than specifically for prostatitis.
A few small clinical studies and systematic reviews suggest nettle may be beneficial in reducing symptoms of chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome, particularly when used with other herbal extracts. Nevertheless, these studies often have methodological limitations, small sample sizes, and inconsistent results. Major urology guidelines do not currently recommend nettle as a primary treatment for prostatitis due to insufficient high-quality evidence.
In summary, nettle is used both traditionally and in modern herbal practice for prostate health, and there is limited scientific evidence suggesting some benefit for prostatitis, but the quality and quantity of research is not strong. More rigorous studies are needed to clarify its efficacy.
