Triterpenes are a class of phytochemicals found in various plants, including saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) and pumpkin seeds, which have a long history of traditional use in supporting prostate health. Saw palmetto extracts, which are rich in triterpenes, have been used for centuries in folk medicine, particularly for alleviating lower urinary tract symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Historical evidence suggests that Native American populations used saw palmetto berries for urinary and reproductive issues.
While some clinical studies have examined the potential efficacy of triterpene-rich extracts (like saw palmetto) in improving urinary symptoms and quality of life in men with BPH, results have been mixed and often inconclusive. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses suggest that, although some individuals may experience symptomatic relief, the overall effect size is small, and there is no consistent evidence of significant improvement compared to placebo. The scientific support for isolated triterpenes (as opposed to whole plant extracts) is limited.
Therefore, the use of triterpenes to support the prostate is primarily based on traditional practices rather than robust scientific validation. More well-designed, large-scale clinical trials are needed to establish clear efficacy and mechanism of action for triterpenes in prostate health.
