For the body system: Prostate
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Pedalium murex, commonly known as "Large Caltrops" or "Gokhru," has a long-standing place in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani. Traditionally, Pedalium is used for urinary tract health and to support male reproductive functions, including the prostate. It is believed to act as a diuretic, aphrodisiac, and to help soothe urinary discomforts that may be associated with prostate enlargement or inflammation. Historical use focuses on its ability to improve urine flow and reduce symptoms linked to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
However, clinical or preclinical studies specifically evaluating Pedalium’s effect on the prostate are limited. Most available evidence is anecdotal or based on ethnobotanical records. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which could theoretically benefit the prostate, but direct links to prostate health or prevention/treatment of prostate conditions are lacking in the scientific literature. In summary, the use of Pedalium to support the prostate is primarily grounded in traditional practice, and robust scientific validation is not currently available.
