Lignans are a group of polyphenolic compounds found in plants such as flaxseed, sesame seeds, and whole grains. Their use in supporting prostate health has some scientific backing, primarily due to their phytoestrogenic and antioxidant properties. Lignans are metabolized by gut bacteria into enterolignans (enterodiol and enterolactone), which can interact with estrogen and androgen receptors and may help modulate hormone-related processes involved in prostate health.

Several observational studies have explored the relationship between lignan intake and prostate cancer risk. Some research suggests that higher lignan consumption is associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer, possibly due to anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and hormone-modulating effects. For example, a meta-analysis published in the journal Nutrients (2019) reported a potential inverse association between dietary lignan intake and prostate cancer risk. Additionally, preclinical studies have shown that lignans can inhibit growth and induce apoptosis in prostate cancer cell lines.

However, the evidence is not universally strong or consistent; some studies have found no significant association, and randomized controlled trials in humans are limited. The overall body of evidence supports the plausibility of lignans contributing to prostate health, but further high-quality clinical studies are needed to establish their efficacy more conclusively.
