Evidence supporting the use of: Gokhru
For the body system: Prostate
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Gokhru (Tribulus terrestris) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine, where it has been employed to address various urinary and reproductive system concerns, including supporting prostate health, alleviating urinary discomfort, and improving male vitality. Traditionally, gokhru is believed to possess diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties that can benefit the urinary tract and prostate function. In Ayurveda, formulations containing gokhru are commonly prescribed for conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and urinary difficulties, though these traditional uses are based on empirical observations rather than rigorous clinical trials.
Scientific evidence for gokhru’s effectiveness in supporting the prostate is limited and not robust. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that Tribulus terrestris might have anti-inflammatory effects and could theoretically influence the prostate, but direct high-quality human clinical trials specifically evaluating its efficacy for prostate health are lacking. Most research has focused on its effects on sexual function, testosterone levels, and kidney health rather than direct prostate support. Therefore, while gokhru’s use for prostate health is primarily grounded in traditional practice, current scientific validation is insufficient to strongly endorse its efficacy for this body system.
