There is some scientific evidence suggesting a relationship between vitamin D status and progesterone levels, but the evidence is not strong enough to consider vitamin D supplementation a primary treatment for low progesterone. Several observational studies have found correlations between vitamin D deficiency and various reproductive hormone imbalances, including low progesterone, especially in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or other reproductive disorders. Vitamin D receptors are present in ovarian tissue, and vitamin D is believed to play a role in steroidogenesis, the process by which the ovaries produce hormones such as progesterone. Some small interventional studies suggest that correcting vitamin D deficiency may modestly improve progesterone levels or luteal phase function, but the results are inconsistent and often confounded by other factors. Current clinical guidelines do not recommend vitamin D supplementation specifically for the treatment of low progesterone, but maintaining adequate vitamin D levels is generally encouraged for overall reproductive health. The use of vitamin D for this purpose is thus scientifically plausible and partially supported by preliminary studies, but high-quality randomized controlled trials are lacking. In summary, while there is some scientific rationale and early evidence linking vitamin D and progesterone, it is not robust enough to fully validate its use for treating low progesterone.
