Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Vitex (commonly referring to Vitex agnus-castus, also known as chasteberry) has a long history of traditional use in supporting female reproductive health, particularly in regulating menstrual cycles and managing premenstrual syndrome (PMS). In traditional European herbalism, Vitex was sometimes used to address infertility and hormonal imbalances, and there are anecdotal reports of its use to support conception. However, its direct use for supporting or treating conditions during pregnancy is not well documented in either traditional or scientific literature. In fact, most modern herbal references caution against the use of Vitex during pregnancy due to insufficient safety data and the potential for hormonal effects. While some women historically used Vitex in the pre-conception period to help regulate the menstrual cycle and promote fertility, its use is generally discontinued once pregnancy is confirmed. Scientific studies on Vitex have primarily focused on its effects on PMS, luteal phase defects, and hyperprolactinemia, rather than on pregnancy itself. As such, there is only weak traditional justification and little to no scientific evidence for using Vitex during pregnancy, and caution is advised.
