Vitamin B9, also known as folic acid (synthetic form) or folate (natural form), is scientifically validated for use in supporting pregnancy. Robust clinical evidence demonstrates that adequate folic acid intake before conception and during early pregnancy significantly reduces the risk of neural tube defects (NTDs) such as spina bifida and anencephaly in the developing fetus. This finding is supported by large-scale randomized controlled trials, epidemiological studies, and meta-analyses. Health authorities worldwide, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), recommend women of childbearing age consume 400 micrograms of folic acid daily, beginning at least one month before conception and continuing through the first trimester.

The scientific rationale lies in folate’s essential role in DNA synthesis, cell division, and tissue growth, all of which are critical during the rapid development of the embryo. Inadequate folate status has been directly linked to congenital malformations, particularly of the neural tube. Due to the strength and consistency of the evidence, many countries fortify staple foods with folic acid to improve population-wide folate status and reduce birth defect rates. Thus, the use of Vitamin B9 during pregnancy is strongly supported by high-quality scientific evidence and forms a cornerstone of prenatal nutritional recommendations.
