Evidence supporting the use of: Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin Phosphate)
For the health condition: Pregnancy (herbs and supplements for)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Vitamin B2, also known as riboflavin (and in some supplements as riboflavin phosphate), is an essential water-soluble vitamin with established roles in cellular energy production and antioxidant protection. Its use in pregnancy is based on scientific understanding of maternal and fetal nutritional needs. Riboflavin is critical for the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, and acts as a precursor for the coenzymes FMN and FAD, both of which are necessary for numerous enzymatic reactions in the body. During pregnancy, riboflavin requirements increase to support maternal tissue growth, fetal development, and to accommodate higher metabolic activity. Deficiency in riboflavin during pregnancy has been associated in some observational studies with adverse outcomes such as preeclampsia, anemia, and poor fetal growth, although these associations are not conclusive. Supplementation is generally recommended in cases of dietary insufficiency or in populations at risk for deficiency (such as those with limited dietary diversity or certain malabsorption disorders). However, direct evidence from randomized controlled trials supporting riboflavin supplementation for the prevention or treatment of specific pregnancy complications is limited. Current guidelines emphasize ensuring adequate intake of riboflavin during pregnancy as part of prenatal nutrition, but do not recommend high-dose supplementation unless deficiency is documented. In summary, the use of riboflavin phosphate in pregnancy is scientifically justified due to its essential role and increased demand during gestation, but the evidence for supplementation beyond nutritional adequacy is moderate.
