Rating (out of 5): 2

Fish roe (fish eggs) has been used traditionally in various cultures to support fertility and pregnancy. In particular, indigenous peoples such as the Inuit and certain Native American tribes have historically valued fish roe as a vital food for women of childbearing age, pregnant women, and young children. The basis for its use lies in its nutrient density—fish roe is rich in omega-3 fatty acids (especially DHA and EPA), vitamin D, vitamin B12, choline, and high-quality protein, all of which are important for fetal development and maternal health. However, most of the support for using fish roe in pregnancy comes from traditional dietary practices, not from controlled scientific studies.

There is some indirect scientific rationale: omega-3 fatty acids are well-studied for their role in fetal brain and eye development, and deficiencies in nutrients found in fish roe have been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Nonetheless, there are no high-quality clinical trials specifically demonstrating that consumption of fish roe (as opposed to fish or fish oil supplements) confers unique benefits during pregnancy. Therefore, while traditional use is strong and the nutritional profile suggests potential benefits, direct scientific evidence specific to fish roe in pregnancy is limited. Pregnant women considering fish roe should also be aware of risks such as foodborne illness and potential contaminants like mercury.
