Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) is an omega-3 fatty acid that has scientific validation for its use in pregnancy. DHA is a major structural component of the human brain, retina, and many other body parts. During pregnancy, adequate DHA is essential for fetal brain and eye development. Multiple randomized controlled trials and observational studies have shown that maternal DHA supplementation is associated with improved neurodevelopmental outcomes in offspring, including higher scores on measures of attention, problem-solving, and IQ in early childhood. Additionally, some studies suggest that DHA may reduce the risk of preterm birth.

Health organizations such as the American Pregnancy Association and several international consensus panels recommend DHA supplementation during pregnancy, with typical suggested dosages of at least 200 mg per day. The scientific evidence is strongest for neurodevelopmental benefits, with moderate evidence for reduction in preterm birth risk. DHA is commonly included in prenatal vitamins and is recognized for its safety profile when consumed in recommended amounts. While not considered an "herbal" supplement, its use as a dietary supplement in pregnancy is well-supported by clinical research and is endorsed by major medical bodies.
