Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sceletium tortuosum (commonly known as Kanna) has a long history of traditional use in South Africa, where indigenous peoples have consumed it for its mood-elevating properties, stress reduction, and to cope with trauma or hardship. The plant contains alkaloids, such as mesembrine, which are believed to affect serotonin reuptake and may contribute to its calming and anxiolytic effects. While there is considerable anecdotal and traditional evidence supporting its use for mood regulation, including in situations that might be analogous to post-traumatic stress, rigorous scientific studies specifically examining Sceletium for the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are lacking.

Some small-scale, preliminary clinical studies and animal research suggest that Sceletium extracts may reduce anxiety and improve mood, likely due to their action on the serotonin system. However, these studies generally address anxiety and depression rather than PTSD directly. There have not yet been large, high-quality clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of Sceletium for PTSD, nor is there regulatory approval for this specific indication. In summary, the use of Sceletium for PTSD is justified primarily by traditional usage and indirect evidence from related conditions, rather than robust scientific validation for this particular disorder.
