Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ashoka (Saraca asoca) is a celebrated herb in Ayurvedic medicine, historically used for a variety of gynecological conditions, especially those related to menstruation and uterine health. Its bark and extracts are commonly included in traditional formulations meant to address menstrual disorders, excessive bleeding, and general female reproductive health. In the context of post-partum weakness, Ashoka is often recommended in Ayurvedic texts and traditional practices as a uterine tonic thought to help restore uterine tone and support recovery after childbirth. However, this use is grounded primarily in tradition and empirical practice rather than in rigorous scientific validation.

The available contemporary scientific literature on Ashoka mainly investigates its effects on uterine contraction, anti-inflammatory properties, and potential estrogenic activity. While some animal and in vitro studies suggest beneficial effects on the uterus and possible modulation of female hormones, there is a lack of high-quality clinical trials directly assessing its efficacy for post-partum weakness in humans. Consequently, while Ashoka’s use for post-partum recovery is well-documented in the Ayurvedic tradition, the scientific evidence remains preliminary and indirect. As such, the supporting evidence is rated at 2: grounded in tradition with some preclinical support, but lacking robust clinical validation.
