Tree Peony (Paeonia suffruticosa), specifically its root bark known as "Mudanpi" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for a variety of conditions, including infections and inflammatory diseases. In TCM, Mudanpi is considered to "clear heat," "cool the blood," and "dispel stasis," and has often been included in multi-herb formulas aimed at treating febrile illnesses, which can include conditions understood today as pneumonia. The rationale for its use in pneumonia is rooted in its supposed ability to reduce fever, inflammation, and stagnation associated with "heat toxins" in the lungs. Modern pharmacological studies have shown that Tree Peony root contains compounds such as paeonol and paeonoside, which exhibit anti-inflammatory and some antibacterial activities in vitro and in animal studies. However, there is limited direct clinical evidence supporting its isolated use for pneumonia in humans, and most contemporary research focuses on general anti-inflammatory or immunomodulatory effects rather than on respiratory infections specifically. The use of Tree Peony for pneumonia, therefore, remains primarily supported by tradition, with only limited scientific exploration. Most evidence comes from its role in combination therapies within TCM rather than as a standalone treatment.
