Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Omega-3 fatty acids, primarily found in fish oil, have garnered scientific interest for their potential role in alleviating symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), including PMS Type S, which is characterized by sugar cravings, fatigue, and mood swings. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have explored the therapeutic effects of omega-3 supplementation on PMS symptoms. Evidence suggests that omega-3 fatty acids may help reduce the severity of mood-related symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and irritability, which are often pronounced in PMS Type S, likely due to their anti-inflammatory properties and influence on neurotransmitter pathways (especially serotonin and dopamine).

For example, a 2013 double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial found that women taking omega-3 supplements reported significant reductions in both psychological and physical PMS symptoms compared to those taking a placebo. Other studies have shown similar trends, though results are not uniformly positive, and sample sizes are often small. The mechanism is thought to involve modulation of prostaglandin production and reduction of inflammation, both of which may play a role in PMS symptomatology.

While traditional use of omega-3s for PMS is limited, the growing body of scientific literature provides moderate support for their use, particularly for mood and behavioral symptoms. Given the safety profile and additional health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, their use as an adjunctive treatment for PMS Type S is considered reasonable, even though more large-scale studies are needed for definitive conclusions.
